Thanks to a generous gift from the Hedrich family, those simple acts of care are now reflected in two meaningful spaces at the Aroostook House of Comfort: Sandy's Kitchen and Joe's Laundry Room. For the Hedrich family, supporting the Aroostook House of Comfort was about more than donating. It was an opportunity to honor two people whose kindness, hospitality, and hard work shaped generations of their family. It helped ensure that other families receive comfort during life's most difficult moments.

Two Spaces, Two Stories

The Aroostook House of Comfort is a hospice home with six patient beds, serving patients and families throughout northern Maine. It is the only facility of its kind north of Augusta. Every space inside its walls exists to make an impossibly hard time a little softer, and the Hedrich family's gift honors two people who understood exactly what that means.

Sandy's Kitchen is dedicated in memory of Sandra "Sandy" Hedrich, mom, mother-in-law, and Nanny to the family. Sandy was known for her warm hospitality and her love of cooking for the people around her, and her own kitchen table was a place where everyone felt at home. "Sandy's Kitchen was dedicated in memory of our mom, mother-in-law, and Nanny," the Hedrich family shared. "Her kitchen was always a place where everyone felt welcome, making this tribute especially meaningful." Now her name is attached to the Family Kitchen at AHOC, a space where families gather to prepare meals, share stories, and hold on to a sense of normalcy during their loved one's final days.

Joe's Laundry Room honors Uriah Joseph "Joe" Hedrich II, dad, father-in-law, and Grampy. Joe founded the family's first laundromat, planting the seed for what has since grown into Maine Laundry Centers, now carried forward by Todd and Jenn across communities statewide. "We dedicated Joe's Laundry Room in memory of our dad, father-in-law, and Grampy, in honor of the family business he founded and that Todd and Jenn have proudly continued," the family explained. It is a fitting tribute, a practical, quietly essential space, named for a man whose life's work was practical, quietly essential care for others.

A Legacy You Can Be Part Of

Since opening in 2018, the Aroostook House of Comfort has served more than 1,000 community members across 80 towns in Maine. Gifts like the Hedrich family's help ensure that legacy continues, one name, one story, one act of comfort at a time.
